If God planned everything, what is his plan for me?
Wouldn’t we love to know the details of what God has in store for us!
But part of being human, being created “in the image of God” as Genesis 1:27 tells us, is that we get to make choices. God is in control over everything, but at the same time, we make real choices that shape the way our lives turn out. While we’d really like to know in advance what specific things God has in store for us, it seems from my reading of the Bible that God is much more interested in the general pattern of our lives, than in us conforming to some specific detail. ie God is more interested in us honouring him with our lives, than whether we become a teacher, a lawyer, a pastor, or a garbage collector. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 for example, the Apostle Paul says that it’s God’s will that we “give thanks in all circumstances” yet nowhere do we find a verse saying that it’s God will that we pursue a particular career.
So you can see that God’s plan for us is to live in ways that honour him, for him to bless us amazingly (Romans 8:28, for example “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him”) and for us to make wise decisions throughout our lives.
